Photographic Strategies

 Ren Hang

Ren Hang was a Chinese photographer, he is mostly known for his controversial nude photography. His strategy of completing a photoshoot is fairly simple, he meets up with people and gets to know them then discusses the style of photos that will be taken. If everyone agrees then the process will go smoothly but if the models are not comfortable or do not agree with what is going on, they stop completely. He controls almost every aspect of the photoshoot, from the way the models pose to what props are used and how they are used. Since Hang receives a lot of criticism for his work, only some of his pieces would be seen by people, and even then, he only knows that his friends and those who participate in his photoshoots support him.  "I don't like the way some artists only care about success and results", in Hang's situation success wasn't something that could be measured since the majority of society disagreed with what he was doing. But, given that, he never stopped taking pictures, he wasn't someone who cared about the results or success because he was completing the vision he had and that was enough for him.

 Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman is an American artist who is known for her portraits. She is in control of everything that goes on during her photoshoots, however, unlike other photographers, Sherman is her own model and usually transforms herself to fit the setting of the image. Sherman recalls on her photos saying, "They now have a new life as like different sort of pictures" If you don't pay attention to the photos, it is very easy to miss the fact that every image is of her playing a dramatically emphasized character. In the image above, the character Sherman is playing looks to be a wealthy woman at a party, this image could be for either a clothing company or a makeup company.

Mark Newton

Mark Newton is a fashion photographer. From his website it looks as if he like to create a contrast between what the model is wearing and the setting of the photoshoot. Being a fashion photographer for years he knows to some extent what to look for, he says "people are looking for images that challenge them," Especially in fashion photography, the main goal is to capture the audience's attention and Newton achieves this by creating contrast within his images. For example, in the image above, the model is wearing an outfit that does not match the setting, there are also sheets of fabric being blown by the wind to create even more contrast within the image making it stand out.
